"The Fault in our Stars" movie experience/review

Fangirls and Fanboys, take out your popcorn because this is going to be one long movie review.

On the evening of Thursday June 5, 2014 I went to the premier of the most anticipated movie of the summer, The Fault in our Stars. My best friend and I (who is also a HUGE fan like myself) arrived at the theater extra early with our "okay? okay." shirts on and screaming and crying like your typical fangirls.

While waiting for the doors to open, we met so many great people and other fangirls who were equally as excited -and emotional- as us. (shoutout to the nerdfighters we met! DFTBA) I have to admit, though, I was extremely happy/excited that there were fans that had read the book and could actually understand the quotes and the symbolism during the movie that you could only understand by reading the book.

As we entered the cinema, we all got an amazing *"signed" poster and a charm bracelet. By then we were all going crazy (well even more than usual haha) and we sprinted into the theater screaming and crying. (no I am not kidding you, my friend and I were actually screaming so loud when we saw the screen I was surprised no one called the police because it probably sounded like we were getting murdered).

And then the movie started.

Now, I am not going to give any spoilers, like so many did before, but I'm sure about 80% of you who are reading this have read and/or seen The Fault in our Stars so I'm hoping when I say "at that part I was sobbing" you know what part I am talking about. For this movie review, I am going to do a book to movie comparison because I feel it is the best way to review this movie. Going into the theater I tried, I really did, to have no expectations, but after reading the book four times it was hard not too. Let me just say, my expectations were not just met but SURPASSED what I thought the movie was going to turn out.

Like the book Hazel Grace Lancaster, a depressed yet strong 16 year-old girl who had been suffering from stage four cancer since the age of 13, (played by the actress Shailene Woodley) narrated throughout the movie, which I really enjoyed. Speaking of actresses, Shailene Woodley did an AMAZING job! She looked the part, (props for cutting off her hair to cancer!!) and really portrayed Hazel as I imagined her to be. Also Ansel Elgort, who played Augustus Waters a 17 year-old boy who had been NEC for a year and eventually became Hazel's lover, was the perfect Augustus Waters. Now I'm not just saying words like,"perfect" and "amazing" just because I can, trust me, I am always completely honest, I am saying them because I think they played the characters so well and really brought them to life. You could really feel the chemistry between the actors and characters alike and I really got attached to them. Side note- can we just talk about how amazingly attractive Ansel is??? #hagustus (I ship it)

Let's talk about pronunciation. Okay, was I the only person who thought it was pronounced Peter Van Hoo-ten instead of How-ten? And I never knew how to pronounce Lidewij anyway.

The location, sets, and wardrobe were absolutely phenomenal, and just how I pictured them in my mind. Hazel's and Augustus' rooms were much nicer than how I pictured, though, but that's not a big deal everything is not going to be how I pictured it. Not going to say much else on this topic it was great! The scenes that were from the book in the movie were overall, again, just how I pictured it, but they left some key scenes out for example:
-the part where Hazel and Kaitlyn went to the mall together
-all the scenes where Hazel was at school
-The part when Hazel visited Issac in the hospital
-all the parts about Caroline Matthews
-when Hazel and Augustus sell the swing set
-when Augustus and his mother were arguing
-ect.

Now considering that the movie is about 2 hours and the list is very small the movie was almost exactly like the book! YAY! This happens so rarely that I feel as though it should be celebrated! Overall, I thought the jokes were funnier in the movie than the book but the movie wasn't as sad (DON'T KILL ME I STILL CRIED HYSTERICALLY AT THAT PART AND THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MOVIE) but I just did not get attached to the characters as much as I did while reading the book okay? Okay. Just got hit by a truckload of feels right here. I also loved mouthing the quotes as the actors were saying it and signing along to the soundtrack.

This movie was honestly amazing and if you have not seen it yet, I really recommend it to anyone who's read it or not. (but being a reader, I am always going to say READ THE BOOK FIRST but that's just me haha)
FINAL REVIEW:  4.8/5

Thanks for reading! See you next time!
